Dropshipping agent vs 3PL in China: which one do you need?

Both promise the same thing — someone else handles your logistics. But a dropshipping agent and a third-party logistics provider (3PL) are built for different stages of an ecommerce business. Picking the wrong one either caps your margins or buries you in minimums you cannot fill.

What a dropshipping agent actually does

A dropshipping agent sits between your store and Chinese suppliers. When an order comes in, the agent buys the product, quality-checks it, packs it and ships it to your customer under your name. You hold no inventory and pay per order.

Agents shine when your catalog changes fast. Testing a new product next week? The agent sources it in days, with no stock commitment. That flexibility is why most stores between roughly 10 and 100 orders a day work with an agent rather than a warehouse contract.

What a China 3PL does differently

A 3PL is warehouse infrastructure: you buy inventory upfront, store it in their facility, and they pick, pack and ship as orders arrive. Costs per order are usually lower than an agent’s, but you carry stock risk and need consistent volume to justify storage fees.

3PLs make sense once your winners are proven: stable products, predictable volume, and enough margin data to commit to bulk purchasing — which itself cuts your unit cost significantly versus per-order sourcing.

The answer for most scaling stores: both

Mature operations run a hybrid: proven winners are bulk-purchased and fulfilled 3PL-style from warehouse stock, while new product tests run through agent-style per-order sourcing. When a test wins, it graduates to inventory.

That is exactly how Apex Hub is structured — agent-style dropshipping fulfillment and a China fulfillment center under one roof, so a product can move from test to private label stock without changing partners. If you sell on Amazon, the same inventory can flow through our FBA prep service.
