China’s dropshipping and sourcing hubs: which city makes what
Type “dropshipping agent” plus almost any Chinese city into Google and someone will claim to be the local expert. The reality is simpler: Chinese manufacturing is organized by product cluster, not by agent. Here is where things are actually made, city by city, and what that means for how you source.
Why the city matters, and why it matters less than you think
Every major product category in China has a home town. Decades of factories, component suppliers, mold makers and wholesale markets have clustered around a handful of cities, and buying from inside the cluster gets you better prices, faster samples and more supplier choice.
What the city does not decide is where your parcel ships from. Export happens through a few hubs with the ports, airports and carriers to move small parcels worldwide every day. That is why a good agent has two addresses: a sourcing network across the clusters, and an operations base in an export hub. Apex Hub’s base is Shenzhen.
Shenzhen: electronics, gadgets and the fastest exit from China
Shenzhen is the consumer electronics capital of the world. Phone accessories, earbuds, smart home devices, LED lighting, power banks, drones and 3D printers all come from its factories, and the Huaqiangbei market lets you touch the component supply chain in a single afternoon.
It is also the best-connected export point in southern China: Yantian and Shekou container ports, Bao’an airport and Hong Kong next door. Unit prices are a little higher than inland, but for tech products the sampling speed and export access are worth it.
Guangzhou: apparel, bags and beauty
An hour north of Shenzhen, Guangzhou is the home of the Canton Fair and of China’s largest garment districts. Fashion, activewear, leather bags and shoes are sourced here, and the Baiyun district is the country’s biggest cosmetics and skincare cluster. If you sell clothing or beauty, your supplier is probably in or around Guangzhou.
Dongguan: the factory town between them
Squeezed between Shenzhen and Guangzhou, Dongguan is where a lot of the actual assembly happens: toys, electronics, furniture, shoes and bags. Fewer showrooms, more production lines. Agents rarely mention it, but a large share of “Shenzhen” and “Guangzhou” products are made in Dongguan.
Foshan and Zhongshan: home, furniture and lighting
Foshan is the furniture and home goods capital: sofas, storage, ceramics and tiles, kitchen appliances from the Shunde district. Neighboring Zhongshan’s Guzhen town is the lighting capital, from LED strips to designer lamps. Bulky products, so shipping method matters more than unit price here.
Yiwu: small commodities and the lowest MOQs in China
Yiwu, in Zhejiang province, hosts the largest wholesale market for small commodities on the planet: jewelry, hair accessories, phone cases, gifts, party supplies, stationery, seasonal decor, novelty toys. Prices are low, minimums are tiny and a new product can be sourced in a day.
The trade-off is quality variance. Yiwu stalls are traders, not always factories, and two identical-looking items can come from very different workshops. This is the city where an agent’s quality control earns its fee. Nearby Yongkang (same Jinhua prefecture) specializes in hardware, tools and vacuum flasks.
Ningbo, Taizhou and Hangzhou: plastics, molds and cross-border ecommerce
Ningbo has one of the busiest ports in the world and a deep plastics and injection-molding base: household goods, stationery, auto accessories, small appliances. Taizhou next door is the mold-making capital. Hangzhou is strong in apparel and silk, and as the home of Alibaba it has the densest cross-border ecommerce ecosystem in the country.
Shanghai and Suzhou: premium suppliers and compliance-heavy products
The Yangtze delta is where you go for higher-spec manufacturing: precision parts, machinery, quality-focused factories used to Western audits and certifications. Costs are higher, but for products that need CE, FDA or FCC paperwork done properly, Shanghai and Suzhou suppliers are often the safer bet. Shanghai’s port is the largest in the world by volume.
Qingdao: lashes, beauty tools and the northern port
Qingdao’s Pingdu district produces the majority of the world’s false eyelashes, along with beauty tools and textiles. It is also the main port for northern China. Searches for “dropshipping Qingdao” are almost always beauty sellers; the products are then routed through a southern or eastern hub for parcel export.
Wuhan, Zhengzhou, Chengdu and the inland cities
Inland manufacturing is growing fast (Zhengzhou assembles a large share of the world’s smartphones; Wuhan is strong in textiles and automotive parts), and labor is cheaper. For small ecommerce brands, though, these cities rarely make sense as a direct source: fewer export-ready suppliers and a longer road to a port. Products made inland are usually consolidated in Shenzhen or Shanghai before they leave the country.
The cluster map at a glance
| City | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Shenzhen | Electronics, gadgets, phone accessories, LED, drones | Slightly higher unit prices; best export access |
| Guangzhou | Apparel, bags, shoes, cosmetics and skincare | Traders vs factories; check who actually produces |
| Dongguan | Toys, electronics assembly, furniture, footwear | Production-only; few showrooms |
| Foshan / Zhongshan | Furniture, home goods, ceramics, appliances, lighting | Bulky items; freight method drives cost |
| Yiwu | Jewelry, accessories, gifts, party supplies, stationery | Quality variance; QC is essential |
| Ningbo / Taizhou | Plastics, household goods, molds, auto accessories | Mold costs for custom products |
| Shanghai / Suzhou | Premium and compliance-heavy products, precision parts | Higher costs and MOQs |
| Qingdao | False eyelashes, beauty tools, textiles | Northern location; parcels routed via a southern hub |
So do you need a dropshipping agent in each city?
No. What you need is one partner with three things: the ability to buy inside the right cluster for each product, a consolidation point with real export infrastructure, and a single quality standard applied to everything before it ships.
That is how Apex Hub is built. We are a dropshipping agent based in Shenzhen, we source from factories across all of the clusters above, and every order is inspected, branded and shipped from one place. Whether your product comes from Yiwu or Foshan, you deal with one team, one dashboard and one tracking flow. Read more about how our China dropshipping agent service works.
How to decide where your product should come from
1. Follow the cluster, not the city you have heard of
A phone case is cheaper and better in Shenzhen or Yiwu than in Shanghai, however famous Shanghai is. Ask your agent where the category is concentrated and start there.
2. Weigh unit price against quality control access
The cheapest cluster is often the one with the most variance. If margins are thin, budget for inspection rather than gambling on a lower price.
3. Think about the export hub last, but think about it
A product from an inland city adds days before it even reaches a port. Consolidating in Shenzhen or Shanghai keeps delivery times predictable for your customers. Still deciding between per-order sourcing and stocked inventory? See dropshipping agent vs 3PL.
